Shane pitched off his board to avoid a collision with another kid who dropped in on him. Anybody else, and a fight would have started, but Shane was too focused. I saw him pump his fists in the air to congratulate the kid who dropped in on him when he got back in the lineup. The kid had gotten a pretty good wave off him, but Shane wasn’t just easygoing, he was too secure in his own world to let the little stuff bother him.

The wind blew the ashes off my cigarette before I had time to thump them. The sun, which had blazed out so fiercely, dimmed under a run of clouds. It was as if the temperature dropped fifteen degrees. Shane did a cut back and then milked the wave by pumping the last little bit of energy out of it with a pistoning of his legs.

I leaned back against the hard bench and closed my eyes. I wished I was Shane’s age when I started surfing. It would have been so much easier to begin at twelve instead of eighteen. At eighteen, you had too much other bullshit around to take away your focus.

There was all the social bullshit, that and trying to get laid. I thought about this same time last year, back home. DeeAnn had given me the invitation to her party and I’d decided to go. I wanted to be going with somebody so bad before I met Chris. My focus was all messed up. I guess that’s what made me find my way to DeeAnn’s party.
